Electric Powered Wireless Bicycle

A new electrically powered bicycle wheel, with fully integrated battery, motor and wireless control  is now available for $699. The wheel is manufactured by Superpedestrian, Inc who has licensed the original design  from MIT’s SENSEable City Lab, a research project, sponsored by the Mayor of Copenhagen.

The bicycle wheel can be retrofitted to most traditional bicycles and utilizes a completely integrated 48v Li-Ion battery with a 350W motor. The bike can reach speeds up to 20mph, and can be programmed using a Bluetooth connected smartphone. The wheel also uses regenerative braking to help keep the battery charged. The integrated design means very easy to install with no wires to run. The motor is controlled by a “Smart Control” app which allows it to connect to  your smartphone via bluetooth. For instance, you can use the smartphone app to raise or lower the level of assistance the motor gives on a steep hill. Another cool function of the app, is that when it senses you are away from the bike it will lock the wheel automatically!

Needless to say, this new product is clever, easy to install and AWESOME!
