Many of the most promising renewable energy technologies rely on rare and hard to manufacture metals. As society ramps up use of renewables such as solar and wind, substantial reductions in material intensity and an increase in mining will likely strain existing rare metal & material reserves. The following journal article examines in detail this potential bottleneck for renewables.
